The Red Fort
The Red Fort (Lal Qila) is the Mughal fortress-palace with red sandstone walls, part of the Red Fort Complex UNESCO World Heritage Site (inscribed 2007). Inside are the Chatta Chowk covered bazaar, the Naubat Khana, the Diwan-i-Aam and the Diwan-i-Khas. The Prime Minister hoists the national flag from its ramparts on Independence Day. It has usually been closed on Mondays.
Chandni Chowk
Chandni Chowk is the old main street of the walled city, lined with markets and food lanes. It is crowded, so keep your belongings safe and go with a plan or a guide.
Jama Masjid
Jama Masjid is one of the largest mosques in India, built of red sandstone and white marble. It is a working mosque: dress modestly, expect to leave your shoes at the entrance, and note that entry for visitors is usually restricted at prayer times.
A simple order for the day
- Start early at the Red Fort, before the crowds.
- Walk along Chandni Chowk for the markets and food.
- Finish at Jama Masjid, outside prayer times.
